Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Despite scoring a season low on Tuesday the No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team went to Winona Lake and won 62-55 at No. 18-ranked Grace (Ind.).
The Wildcats were able to keep the Lancers in check on the defensive end of the floor as they limited them to 37.5-percent (18 of 48) shooting and 30.0-percent (6 of 20) shooting from 3-point range. The Lancers committed 22 turnovers, twice the number that the Wildcats had.
Indiana Wesleyan (21-2, 9-2 CL) also received a large contribution from the bench where they outscored Grace 24-5. Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Jacob Johnson (FR/Mooresville, Ind.) each scored 11 points off the bench and Aaron Murray (SO/Louisville, Ky.) added two.
To open the game, Grace scored 11 of the first 13 points. A 3-pointer by Logan Irwin increased the Grace advantage to 20-8 with 12:24 still left in the opening half. A Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) bucket late in the half cut the deficit to three points at 30-27 before Grace entered halftime up 31-27.
Indiana Wesleyan scored the first six points of the second half. Peters connected on two free throws for a 33-31 lead with 15:49 to play. It was the first lead of the night for IWU.
Grace (17-6, 7-4 CL) tied the score 44-44 on a Chad Hoffer basket down low with 7:13 on the clock. Bettinger then fueled a 10-2 run in the next two minutes as Indiana Wesleyan gained a 54-46 lead. Bettinger scored seven of the 10 points in that stretch, the only seven points he scored in the game.
The Lancers could only get as close as four points which happened twice in the final 31 seconds. But each of those times Jonny Marlin hit free throws to extend the lead. Marlin finished with a team-leading 15 points and 3 assists.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Luckey Arena on Saturday to face No. 13-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) at 3 p.m. It will be the third consecutive game for Indiana Wesleyan against a top-25 opponent.
