Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) scored a career-high 24 points as No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball defeated visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) 84-69 inside Luckey Arena.
“I was proud of Lane today,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel. “He continues to get better because he is coming in and getting extra time. I’m so proud of that kid and he is carrying us sometimes. He’s a sophomore and went 7-of-7 today and went to the line 13 times. He really produced a lot of offense for us.”
Mahurin was perfect on all seven of his shots today and connected on 10-of-13 from the free throw line. His previous career-high was 22 which he set on December 6, 2014 at Saint Francis (Ind.).
Mahurin and Josh Mawhorr (JR/Muncie, Ind.) scored the first two buckets of the game to give Indiana Wesleyan a 4-0 lead to start the game. IWU held Mount Vernon Nazarene nearly five minutes before they scored their first basket. Mahurin scored nine minutes into the game to give Indiana Wesleyan its first double digit lead at 18-7 and IWU went into halftime leading 44-31.
The Wildcat lead remained between 6 to 11 points for the first 10 minutes of the second half when a Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) field goal increased the advantage to 12 at 65-53. The closest the Cougars (12-6, 3-3 CL) got the rest of the afternoon was nine points. A 10-3 run for the Wildcats gave them their largest lead of the day at 77-61.
Peters had a big performance with 19 points and 5 rebounds. He was 6-of-10 shooting and was perfect on 6 free throw attempts.
“He went through a little lull there,” Tonagel said of Peters. “But he fought his way through it by getting in the gym and putting in extra time. When he adds that extra fire power off the bench all of a sudden our team goes to another level.”
Indiana Wesleyan (17-1, 5-1 CL) shot 51.9-percent (27 of 52) today and boasted 6 players with 8 or more points. Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Mawhorr each finished with 11 points, Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) scored 9 points, and DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio) contributed 8 points.
Indiana Wesleyan starts a two game road trip on Tuesday with a game at Taylor in Upland, Indiana. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
