Box Score 2 DES MOINES, Iowa -- The opening weekend for No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball is in the books as they completed the Grand View Invitational on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
Indiana Wesleyan finishes the weekend with a 1-3 record as IWU lost both of their matches today to No. 6 Grand View (Iowa) and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). Following a pair of five set matches on Friday, Indiana Wesleyan played a couple of four set matches. Host Grand View won the Saturday opener 23-25, 25-12, 25-21, 29-27 and Olivet Nazarene concluded the tournament with a 19-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-18 victory.
Indiana Wesleyan had a pair of players with double digit kills. Kristin Predajna (JR/Fishers, Ind.) led all players with 13 kills while Kylie Portera (SO/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) added 11 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Banner Rodgers (FR/Carrollton, Texas) served three aces while Katey Holler (JR/Marion, Ohio) added two service aces plus a team-leading 27 assists.
Portera produced five block assists and Remy Bucknor (SO/Euless, Texas) contributed one solo and one block assist as Indiana Wesleyan had seven total blocks. Ashlen Buck (SO/Brazil, Ind.) amassed a match-best 21 digs.
“The girls played with a lot of heart and togetherness which is encouraging to see after a tough day one,” said Indiana Wesleyan graduate assistant Marci Novak. “We’re still figuring out the best options as a team but all of the girls stepped up and did great things.”
In the final match of the invitational, Portera and Predajna paced the Wildcats with 12 kills apiece. Cifaldi contributed 10 kills, Remy Bucknor had eight, and Morgan Miller (FR/Goshen, Ind.) ended with seven. Cifaldi served three aces and Kelly Cypher (JR/Libertyville, Ill.) had two while Emily Workman (FR/Tinley Park, Ill.) had a match-high 33 assists.
The Wildcats earned eight blocks against the Tigers, including four solos. Portera blocked a pair of attacks while Bucknor and Cifaldi each blocked one. Buck once again led the Wildcats with 19 digs and Holler added 12.
“We’re going through some growing pains as a young team and still need to put the pieces together,” said Novak. “The heart of the girls is there and will continue to improve throughout the season.”
Indiana Wesleyan will host their own invitational next weekend in Luckey Arena. The Wildcat Invitational will begin on Friday with matches against Judson (Ill.) at 4 p.m. and versus Indiana Tech at 8 p.m.
