Box Score 2 UPLAND, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University was eliminated from the Crossroads League Softball Tournament on Thursday night after going 2-2 in the tournament.
Indiana Wesleyan lost their second game of the tournament Thursday night in a game against No. 3-seed Huntington (Ind.) by an 8-4 score. IWU advanced earlier in the day with a 10-3 victory against No. 5-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). After Indiana Wesleyan was eliminated, only three teams remained.
In their first game of the day the Wildcat bats again led the way with double digit runs in their second consecutive Crossroads League Tournament game. IWU scored 15 runs on Wednesday to eliminate Spring Arbor (Mich.) and in the encore performance scored 10 runs on 12 hits against MVNU to advance to play Huntington.
Four Wildcats contributed multi-hit performances and four had extra base hits while seven different players recorded at least one RBI. Sam Hemming (JR/Russiaville, IN), Gabby Bogear (SO/Sacramento, CA), and Allison Bexell (SO/Avon, IN) each tallied two hits and a double while Gabby McIntire (SR/Logansport, IN) added a pair of singles and Emily Sell (SR/Clinton, MI) smashed a double.
IWU loaded the bases in the top of the first inning and Jessica Hull (SR/South Bend, IN) provided the big hit with a two-run single for the early lead. The Cougars claimed the lead in the top of the third inning with three runs but the Wildcats answered right back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 7-3.
Sell doubled in the inning to plate two runs that put the Wildcats in the lead. Bexell and Hemming both hit RBI doubles and Bogear collected an RBI on a groundout to account for the runs. Meredith Scholle (SO/Ada, MI) collected a two run single in the fourth inning and Marissa French (SR/Crawfordsville, IN) hammered a ball to third base for an RBI in the sixth inning for the 10-3 margin of victory.
In the final game versus Huntington the Foresters quickly put up runs in the first inning. HU scored six times as Indiana Wesleyan would never be able to recover.
Indiana Wesleyan did draw within two runs with two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings. Sell drilled a 2-run home run in the fourth inning and Hull followed with her own 2-run home run in the fifth inning as it was a 6-4 game. But over the final two innings of play, Indiana Wesleyan only managed one base runner while Huntington added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the 8-4 final score.
Sell was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the game while Bexell finished 2-for-3. Hemming reached base twice with a single and a walk while Kreitzer clubbed a double and scored.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament in Oakland City, Indiana. The regional tournament will be held May 5-7.
