Box Score 2 WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- The regular season for Indiana Wesleyan University softball came to a close Saturday afternoon at Grace (Ind.) in Winona Lake, Indiana.
Grace won the opening game 8-7 and completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in nine innings. IWU finishes the regular season at 28-22 and 16-16 in the Crossroads League.
Indiana Wesleyan got off to a quick start in game one and led 3-0 after the top of the third inning. But Grace tied it 3-3 in the home half of the third inning and built a 7-3 advantage after five innings of play.
Grace led 8-4 after six innings before Indiana Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to narrow the deficit to 8-7. But IWU failed to plate the tying run in defeat.
Jessica Hull (SR/South Bend, IN) was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while Gabby Bogear (SO/Sacramento, CA) hit 3-for-3 with three RBI. Gabby McIntire (SR/Logansport, IN) suffered the loss with one run on three hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
In game two, the Lancers scored the first run of the game in the third inning before the Wildcats took the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Sara Kreitzer (FR/Ashland, OH) hit a home run in the fourth inning while Bogear scored on an error off the bat of Amanda Brunner (SO/Miamisburg, OH) in the fifth inning.
The Lancers tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning to force extra frames. The Wildcats failed to get a base runner in the two extra innings as the Lancers had a double and then a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning to complete the sweep.
Bogear had two of the Wildcats’ four hits in the loss. Kreitzer had a home run while Meredith Scholle (SO/Ada, MI) contributed a single.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the field on Wednesday in the Crossroads League Tournament.
