Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- It was a wild day of softball Wednesday as Indiana Wesleyan University played at Goshen (Ind.) in Crossroads League action.
Indiana Wesleyan (23-16, 11-10 CL) won the first game in 8-5 in 10 innings with the international tie-breaker coming into play. The second game was 0-0 after two innings but was suspended due to darkness. No make-up date for the suspended game has been announced.
The Maple Leafs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the second and third innings. The Wildcats finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with two runs. Jessica Hull (SR/South Bend, IN) scored on an error and on the next play Melanie Ypya (JR/Collinsville, IL) tripled home Spencer Ferrin (JR/Morrison, CO) for the 2-2 score.
Starting pitcher Janessa Guevara (SO/Lathrop, CA) opened the game and pitched the first three innings. With the score now tied, Hull came in to pitch to begin the fourth inning.
Goshen (2-31, 1-22 CL) quickly reestablished a two run lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Indiana Wesleyan tied the score for the second time in the sixth inning on a two run home run by Amanda Brunner (SO/Miamisburg, OH).
After neither team could break the 4-4 tie through seven innings, the game went into extra innings. The teams combined for only one hit through the eighth and ninth innings so the game went to the international tie-breaker where the last batter from the previous inning starts on second base.
Hull started the 10th inning on second base for the Wildcats and Brunner led the inning off with a RBI single for a 5-4 advantage. Gabby McIntire (SR/Logansport, IN) had an RBI single and Allison Bexell (SO/Avon, IN) drilled an RBI double to lead 7-4. Katie Hall (SO/Danville, IN) singled to center to drive home Bexell for the fourth and final run of the inning for an 8-4 IWU advantage.
Hull struck out the first two batters in the 10th inning before a double scored the runner who started the inning on second base. A ground ball to second base brought the game to a conclusion as Indiana Wesleyan won 8-4.
Hull was the winning pitcher as she allowed one unearned run in 6.0 innings of work. She gave up five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
The Indiana Wesleyan five through eight spots in the lineup went a combined 11-for-19 in the win with seven runs and five RBIs. Hull, Brunner, and Ypya all accounted for three hits while McIntire had two. Hull scored three times while Brunner knocked in three.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays Marian (Ind.) on Friday. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana.
