Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball dropped a pair of games to Taylor (Ind.) tonight at Wildcat Field. Taylor won the opener 16-5 in five innings before scoring six runs in the last inning to win game two by an 8-2 margin.
In the opener, Taylor (30-9, 16-4 CL) scored six times in the second inning and three more in the third inning to lead 9-0. Indiana Wesleyan got back in the game with a four run third inning to trail 9-4.
Spencer Ferrin (JR/Morrison, CO) scored the first IWU run in the third inning when she crossed the plate off a Taylor error. Marissa French (SR/Crawfordsville, IN) was the next batter and she belted a 3-run home run.
Taylor roared back with a seven run fourth inning to lead 16-4. IWU scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning but it was not enough to avoid the five inning mercy rule. French hit a sac fly to score the run for her fourth RBI of the game.
Sam Hemming (JR/Russiaville, IN) accounted for two of the six Indiana Wesleyan hits. Sara Kreitzer (FR/Ashland, OH) was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI while French was 1-for-2 with four runs batted in. Gabby McIntire (SR/Logansport, IN) took the loss with six runs in 2.1 innings.
The Trojans opened game two with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats trimmed the deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning when Kreitzer ripped a double to score Hemming. The scored remained 2-1 until the fourth inning when the Wildcats tied it. Emily Sell (SR/Clinton, MI) singled to center and Melanie Ypya (JR/Collinsville, IL) took third base and then scored on the throw by the center fielder to another base.
Unfortunately for Indiana Wesleyan (22-16, 10-10 CL), it all fell apart in the top of the seventh inning. Taylor scored six times on two hits, two walks, and two IWU errors. Indiana Wesleyan went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring the game to a close.
Janessa Guevara (SO/Lathrop, CA) was the losing pitcher as she gave up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits in 7.0 innings. Indiana Wesleyan had six hits by six different players. Kreitzer had a double and one RBI while Hemming, Amanda Brunner (SO/Miamisburg, OH), Allison Bexell (SO/Avon, IN), and Ypya all contributed a single and a walk.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Goshen (Ind.).
