Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball won both ends of a doubleheader with Goshen (Ind.) today at Wildcat Field and have now won eight of their last nine games overall.
Indiana Wesleyan won the opener 10-2 in a five inning mercy rule and capped the sweep with a 7-2 victory. IWU improves to 18-8 on the season and 6-2 in Crossroads League games.
The Wildcats put up a five spot in the second inning of game one for the early lead and continued to pile it on. After the Maple Leafs score twice in the top of the third inning, the Wildcats answered with one run to lead 6-2. The Wildcat then scored four runs in the fifth inning to earn the mercy rule win with an eight run advantage at 10-2. The game ended when Melanie Ypya (JR/Collinsville, IL) scored when Goshen’s second baseman Krista Sutliff dropped a pop up off the bat of Gabby Bogear (SO/Sacramento, CA).
Sam Hemming (JR/Russiaville, IN) was a perfect 3-for-3 in the win with a home run and two doubles. Hemming scored twice and had three RBI. Jessica Hull (SR/South Bend, IN) was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and Allison Bexell (SO/Avon, IN) was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Gabby McIntire (SR/Logansport, IN) earned the victory as she pitched all 5.0 innings. Both Goshen run were unearned and McIntire allowed just four hits and no walks with five strikeouts. She needed just 63 pitches in the game.
In game two, Goshen scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 advantage into the third inning. Indiana Wesleyan got the bats going once again with a run in the third inning and then took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fourth inning. IWU capped the scoring with four more runs in the fifth inning.
Emily Sell (SR/Clinton, MI) went 3-for-4 with a double, a run score, and a stolen base to lead the 11-hit attack. Gabby Bogear was 2-for-2 with a double while Hemming crushed her third home run on Monday.
McIntire earned her second win of the day, this time in relief. She entered to start the fourth inning with IWU down 2-1. She did not allow another run and limited Goshen to three hits with no walks.
Indiana Wesleyan takes to the road tomorrow and will play at Spring Arbor (Mich.). First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
