ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball picked up three games today in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in a tournament hosted by Lindenwood-Belleville (Mo.) after canceling the Sue Bowman Classic earlier in the week due to the weather.

Indiana Wesleyan won the first game 5-4 vs. Judson (Ill.) and then lost a 13-10 slugfest against Purdue Calumet. IWU completed Saturday with a 2-0 victory against tournament host Lindenwood-Belleville (Mo.).

In the opening game vs. Judson the Wildcats started with a bang. Marissa French (SR, Crawfordsville, IN) launched a 2-run home run off the scoreboard as IWU led 2-0 after the first inning. Sam Hemming (JR, Russiaville, IN) followed suit in the second inning with a leadoff home run and Emily Sell (SR, Clinton, MI) drilled a double for another run as IWU led 4-0. In the third inning, the Wildcats tacked on another run when Katie Hall (SO, Danville, IN) score on a Judson throwing error for a 5-0 lead.

Indiana Wesleyan needed every one of those five runs as Judson made a game of it in the final two innings. Judson collected four runs in the sixth inning to trim the deficit to 5-4 and threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning. Judson loaded the bases with two out and their clean-up hitter at the plate. But she hit into a 6-3 groundout to end the threat and finish the game.

In the middle game on Saturday, Purdue Calumet quickly gained a big advantage with six runs in the top of the first inning. Indiana Wesleyan quickly answered with a four spot in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of three home runs. Gabby Bogear (SO, Sacramento, CA) and Hemming each hit solo shots while Sara Kreitzer (FR, Ashland, OH) hit a 2-run shot for a 6-4 game.

Purdue Calumet extended their lead with a single run in the third but Indiana Wesleyan scored twice in the fourth to trail 7-6. Gabby McIntire (SR, Logansport, IN) connected on an RBI single and Melanie Ypya (JR, Collinsville, IL) drove in another on a RBI fielder’s choice.

PUC had a huge sixth inning where they scored five runs in the sixth inning to lead 12-6. IWU responded in the final inning as Kreitzer drilled a 3-run home run and Hemming hit her third home run of the game to trim the deficit to 13-10. But IWU could not get another runner on base as they lost 13-10.

Following a 23-run game against Purdue Calumet, IWU naturally played a 2-0 game with no runs scored until the final inning vs. Lindenwood-Belleville.

Indiana Wesleyan was unable to figure out the LUB starting pitcher until the fifth inning when Hemming delivered the first Wildcat hit. The game sailed into the top of the seventh inning with no runs. French led off the visitors half of the seventh inning with a double and Kreitzer followed with a double to score the game’s first run. Later in the frame, McIntire hit an RBI single for the 2-0 advantage.

Janessa Guevara (SO, Lathrop, CA) finished the shutout with a 1-2-3 seventh inning for their second win on Saturday. Guevara scattered 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts in the complete game.
