Women?s Basketball Dominates Taylor, Advances to Crossroads League Semifinals

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Junior Teneil Krebs drilled 3-point baskets from each corner to open the game as No. 6-seed Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball made short work of No. 6-seed Taylor (Ind.) 59-37 on Tuesday night in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals.

“I think Teneil Krebs coming out and hitting two 3’s to start the game was a real boost for us,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. “We haven’t been shooting the ball well and that gave us a chance to feel that we can make a basket tonight. It was a great way for us to get started.”

Krebs hit the first of those 3-pointers in the first minute of the game as the Wildcats never trailed tonight.

“I’m just real proud of our kids’ effort,” continued Brooks. “The intensity level that they brought was great and they maintained it. It wasn’t 10 minutes here and 3 minutes there and then we lost it, we maintained it the entire game. We wanted to be the aggressor and set the tone tonight. I think our kids did that and it made a difference.”

Indiana Wesleyan (25-6) limited Taylor to just 15 first half points and IWU led by double digits the entire second half. The final 6:30 of the game featured a 20+ point lead for Indiana Wesleyan.

“We finally came out and played hard for 40 minutes,” added Brooks. “There was a real collective focus to our effort tonight to try and get back to the way we are capable of playing.”

The victory secures a return trip to Huntington (Ind.) on Friday night for Indiana Wesleyan. The two teams tied for second placed in the Crossroads League but Huntington held the tie-breaker for the second seed. The teams split the regular season series with both teams protecting their home court. Huntington won their game at home by a 51-49 outcome on February 5.

Taylor Goshert was the only player for either team to score in double figures tonight. Goshert ended the contest with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals while shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 9-of-14 from the foul line. She carried the Wildcats with 17 points and 8 rebounds in the second half.

“In the second half she came out and got after it. I think the coach may have said a few things to her at halftime,” laughed Brooks. “But that’s how you want a senior to play.”

Katrina Blackmon pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds while Erika Isham swatted a career-best 5 shot attempts. Krebs scored nine points and Isham added six points and six boards. Emma Stahl contributed seven points and four assists.

Taylor (12-19) shot 24.5-percent (12 of 49) on the night and 16.7-percent (2 of 12) from 3-point range. TU committed 19 turnovers in the loss and no player scored more than 7 points.

Indiana Wesleyan has now won 11 straight games overall against Taylor and 9 straight games against Taylor in Luckey Arena.

Indiana Wesleyan travels to No. 2-seed Huntington on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. The winner of that game will advance to the tournament championship on Monday night.
