Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team enters postseason play on a hot streak as they defeated host Marian (Ind.) 66-62 in the regular season finale in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan has won eight in a row and 13-of-14 to end the regular season. IWU heads into the Crossroads League Tournament as the No. 1-seed after winning their sixth straight league title by two games. Overall, Indiana Wesleyan is 25-5 with a 15-3 league mark.
Indiana Wesleyan played in a rowdy gym at #RV Marian (16-7, 12-6 CL) in Indianapolis today on the Knights’ Senior Day. The two teams battled in a back and forth first half that featured 5 ties and 10 lead changes. A Nate Bubash field goal late in the half put Indiana Wesleyan in the lead 26-20, the largest lead before halftime. IWU got a layup by RJ Mahurin to end the period and head into the break up 34-29.
Bob Peters scored on a layup in the fourth minute of the second half for a 42-34 lead. The eight point advantage would be the largest of the day. Aaron Evans hit a 3-pointer midway through the second half for Marian as the Knights took a 45-43 lead courtesy of an 11-2 run. The deficit for IWU was short lived as Bubash scored 20 seconds later for a tied game.
The score was tied 57-57 with 4:26 left to play. Bubash connected on 1-of-2 free throws for the lead that Indiana Wesleyan would not relinquish. The lead would be a single possession nearly the rest of the way.
Jordan Weidner scored down low to give the Wildcats a 62-59 lead with 29 seconds on the clock. The Knights attacked the basket but missed a short shot with nine seconds left. Zac Vandewater pulled down one of his game-best 11 rebounds and threw it to Weidner who was fouled with five seconds left. He hit both free throws to secure the victory.
Weidner led all players with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. RJ Mahurin added 16 points and 5 rebounds while Bubash added 9 points and 5 boards off the bench. IWU shot 46.8-percent (22 of 47) in the game and 60.0-percent (6-of-10) from 3-point range. Indiana Wesleyan dominated the boards, outrebounding Marian by a wide 39-18 margin.
Indiana Wesleyan will be the No. 1-seed in the Crossroads League Tournament which begins on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. IWU draws No. 8-seed Taylor (Ind.) at Luckey Arena in the Quarterfinals. Indiana Wesleyan defeated Taylor 71-52 on January 14 in Marion and then 71-46 on February 11 in Upland. The two point totals for Taylor were their two lowest of the season.
