Box Score 2 UPLAND, Ind. -- The No. 5-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball team had two impressive performances on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Taylor Christmas Classic held in Upland, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan opened the classic on Tuesday with a 66-49 victory against NAIA Division I Cumberlands (Ky.). IWU then defeated Rochester (Mich.) 82-38 on New Year’s Eve.
The pair of wins improves the Indiana Wesleyan record to 12-3 on the season. Cumberlands has their record even out at 7-7 while Rochester falls to 6-14.
Katrina Blackmon (SR/Marion, Ind.) and Chelsea Winner (SO/Maria Stein, Ohio) paced the Wildcats in the 66-49 victory over the Patriots. Blackmon scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Blackmon pulled down four rebounds and contributed two assists and two steals. Winner set a new career-high with 17 points 4-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line. Winner pulled down a team-leading six rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan shot just 28.0-percent (7 of 25) in the opening half but still managed to lead 29-21 at the break. IWU made adjustments at halftime and shot 52.2-percent (12 of 23) in the second half for a combined 39.6-percent shooting effort.
The Wildcats held a massive advantage at the foul line. IWU hit 27-of-35 (77.1-percent) from the free throw line while the Patriots went to the line just 19 times and hit 14 (73.7-percent).
Indiana Wesleyan followed their win against Cumberlands with an 82-38 blowout of Rochester on Wednesday.
The Wildcats dominated all aspects of the game en route to the 44 point victory. IWU led 41-16 at halftime and then outscored the Warriors 41-22 during the second half.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 53.4-percent (31 of 58) from the floor and 52.6-percent (10 of 19) from beyond the arc. There were 14 Wildcats that played more than eight minutes and 12 figured in the scoring column. Indiana Wesleyan dished out 24 assists on 31 field goals made.
Teneil Krebs (SR/Bucyrus, Ohio) scored a game-best 13 points while Tori Kraft (JR/Harbor Beach, Mich.) and Carlee Cottrell (JR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) each added 11 points. Blackmon contributed nine points and Winner chipped in eight points.
Blackmon was named Most Valuable Player of the Taylor Christmas Classic while Winner was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Luckey Arena for their next game on Saturday, January 3. Indiana Wesleyan returns to Crossroads League play and hosts No. 12-ranked Marian (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
