Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball is in familiar territory as they earned the right to play for the Crossroads League Tournament Championship on Saturday.
Indiana Wesleyan, the top-seed in the league tournament, dispatched No. 5-seed Bethel (Ind.) 3-1 in the semifinal round in Luckey Arena. IWU won by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 18-25, 25-10. Indiana Wesleyan is 31-7 on the season while Bethel drops to 18-16.
Indiana Wesleyan has played in the last four championship matches and has won the last three. This is the 13th year IWU head coach Candace Moats has led the IWU program and the 12th time she will play for the league title.
Indiana Wesleyan hosts Taylor (Ind.) for the championship at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Luckey Arena. No. 3-seed Taylor defeated No. 2-seed Grace (Ind.) 3-2 tonight in the other semifinal match in Winona Lake, Indiana. Taylor handed Indiana Wesleyan its only league loss this season in a 3-0 decision in Upland.
“We are real excited,” said Moats. “With it being Taylor there is that cross-town rivalry involved. We’ll be fired up. We are going to focus and get after it.”
The Wildcats first had to get by Bethel and some recent sickness on the team. It was unknown earlier in the day if Remy Bucknor (SO/Euless, Texas) and Morgan Miller (FR/Goshen, Ind.) would be available to play against Bethel. Both played tonight and were major contributors.
“They could have taken the easy way out,” said Moats. “Instead they got inspired in the team time we had. Everyone set things aside during that time and were ready to go to battle. They wanted the challenge and there is a real positive thing with that.”
Bucknor led all players with 14 kills and had a .480 hitting percentage while Miller added nine kills. Three other Wildcats joined Bucknor with double digit kills as Kylie Portera (SO/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had 12 and Bianca Cifaldi (SO/Itasca, Ill.) and Alijah Mulitauopele (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) each finished with 11. Portera earned a .500 hitting percentage.
“We tried to not be real predictable tonight,” Moats said about five players with nine or more kills. “We wanted to spread it around and I was real proud of our middles, especially Kylie Portera who was very strong tonight.”
Katey Holler (JR/Marion, Ohio) had 35 assists and 16 digs. Miller and banner Rodgers each served two aces while Kelly Cypher (JR/Libertyville, Ill.) collected 16 digs.
Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor play for the Crossroads League Tournament Championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside Luckey Arena. The winner of the match receives an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
