Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Goals have started to come for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer team as they defeated visiting Marian (Ind.) by a 3-1 score on Homecoming at Wildcat Field.
After scoring just six goals in their first nine matches of the season, Indiana Wesleyan has scored seven goals in the past two matches. IWU is now 3-8-0 this season but holds a 2-1-0 record in the Crossroads League.
The Wildcats scored four second half goals in a 4-1 win over Bethel on Tuesday and added three first half goals in the win today vs. Marian. The Wildcats outshot the Knights 12-6 and also doubled up in shots on goal with a 6-3 advantage.
Caitlyn Mains (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.) put Indiana Wesleyan in the lead with a goal in the 22nd minute. Lydia Demmitt (FR/Troy, Ohio) took the initial shot that was saved by the Marian keeper. The blocked shot bounced right to Mains in front of the goal as she found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later Katie Pannabecker (JR/Leo, Ind.) scored the game-winning goal in the 27th minute. Pannabecker deked a Marian defender and her shot from outside the 18-yard box beat the keeper for the 2-0 lead. Susan Anthony (JR/Holland, Mich.) opened up a 3-0 Indiana Wesleyan in the 39th minute on a header off the corner kick from Nicole Biggs (JR/Fort Wayne, Ind.).
Marian (6-3-1, 2-1-0 CL) scored their only goal of the match in 81st minute to prevent the Indiana Wesleyan shutout. IWU keeper Megan Weiss (FR/Lexington, Ohio) made two saves to earn the victory.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Taylor (Ind.) in Upland, Indiana.
