Box Score 2 GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Indiana Wesleyan University opened a big weekend of play against non-league foes at the Boneyard Brawl held in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Indiana Wesleyan plays three ranked teams this weekend plus a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll. Indiana Wesleyan lost their first match of the tournament 3-1 to No. 14 Davenport (Mich.) but rebounded with a huge 3-1 upset victory over No. 9 Viterbo (Wis.).
"These girls never stop believing and reaching for greatness," said IWU head coach Candace Moats. "We talked about being a 'we' team this weekend and that is exactly what we did today. Both Davenport and Viterbo took us to another level of focus and play. We stayed together continuing our belief in ourselves and each other. Beating Viterbo was awesome and I am so proud and happy for the girls. They deserve it."
Indiana Wesleyan upset the top-10 ranked Viterbo by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18.
The Wildcats were extremely balanced tonight offensively with five players reaching double digit kills. Only two other Wildcats earned a kill and each had just one. Remy Bucknor (SO/Euless, Texas), Bianca Cifaldi (SO/Itasca, Ill.), and Morgan Miller (FR/Goshen, Ind.) all finished with 13 kills while Alijah Mulitauopele (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kylie Portera (SO/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) each contributed 10 vs. Viterbo. Katey Holler (JR/Marion, Ohio) assisted on 52 attacks. The Wildcats served eight aces in the win and were led by Sam Elkin (SO/Ebensburg, Pa.) with three and Kelly Cypher (JR/Libertyville, Ill.) with two.
IWU blocked 11 shot attempts by Viterbo. Cifaldi had one solo block and six block assists to lead the defensive effort. Bucknor and Portera both earned five block assists. Ashlen Buck (SO/Brazil, Ind.) tallied a match-high 20 digs and Holler chipped in with 14 digs.
Davenport defeated Indiana Wesleyan in the opening match of the weekend by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19.
Miller led all players in the match with 15 kills. Cifaldi totaled 11 kills and Mulitauopele had eight kills. Holler assisted on 41 kills and she served three of the four Wildcat aces in the match.
Indiana Wesleyan picked up six blocks and was led by Bucknor with one solo block and three block assists. Holler had a match-best 21 digs and Miller collected 10.
The Wildcats finish out the Boneyard Brawl on Saturday with a pair of matches. IWU battles #RV Bryan (Tenn.) at 12:30 p.m. and then plays No. 13 Columbia (Mo.) at 3 p.m.
