Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball took four sets to defeat visiting Goshen (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon in Luckey Arena on Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness. IWU wore pink uniforms for the occasion.
Indiana Wesleyan won by scores of 25-19, 17-25, 26-24, 25-13. IWU improves to 23-5 on the season and 13-1 in Crossroads League play while Goshen drops to 11-11 and 6-8 in the league.
“I think Goshen is one of the most skilled and toughest teams in our league,” said IWU head coach Candace Moats. “They challenged us and they’ve challenged everyone in the league so far. I’ve seen that program just continue to climb up and I applaud Jim (Routhier) for what he’s doing. He has them playing and he has some athletes.”
Goshen had a chance to take a 2-1 lead in the match as they held game point in game three with a 24-23 advantage. But Indiana Wesleyan responded with the final three points in the game to lead 2-1. That momentum carried over into game four as Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to an 18-6 lead before finishing for the 25-13 win.
“We made some adjustments and they worked,” said Moats. “And our serving came to life too. That fourth set our serving really came to light and that helped us a ton. It got them off the net and they couldn’t run those quick hits they were doing that were really challenging us.”
Morgan Miller (FR/Goshen, Ind.) tied for a game-high with 15 kills as she hit .387 on the day. Bianca Cifaldi (SO/Itasca, Ill.) added 14 kills and Remy Bucknor (SO/Euless, Texas) finished with nine kills and a .444 hitting percentage. Katey Holler (JR/Marion, Ohio) assisted on 45 Wildcat kills while Miller served two of the teams’ four aces.
Indiana Wesleyan totaled seven blocks in the contest and was led by Miller and Kylie Portera (SO/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) with one solo block and two block assists each. Bucknor and Cifaldi each contributed three block assists. Ashlen Buck (SO/Brazil, Ind.) collected a match-best 23 digs while Kelly Cypher (JR/Libertyville, Ill.) chipped in 10.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays at Saint Francis (Ind.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Then next weekend IWU plays at the Boneyard Brawl in Georgetown, Kentucky and will face four teams currently ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll.
