Men?s Basketball Wins in OT at #20 Huntington

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Jordan Weidner sent the game into overtime at the buzzer and No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball outscored No. 20 Huntington (Ind.) 16-4 in the extra period to win 89-77 on Wednesday night in Huntington, Indiana.

Huntington (14-3, 4-1 CL) led Indiana Wesleyan by six points with 1:16 remaining in the second half. Indiana Wesleyan would eventually cut the lead to two points with :08 seconds left. IWU fouled and Derek Hinen had a chance to ice it with :05 seconds on the clock. He hit the first free throw for a 73-70 lead but missed the second to leave a chance for Indiana Wesleyan.

The Wildcats got the ball past midcourt and called timeout with :03 left. The ball was inbounded to Weidner in the corner and he floated a fade-away shot from the corner and hit nothing but net to send the game into overtime.

“Their coach wanted them to foul,” Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel said of the final play of regulation. “Jordan made a heck of a play. To hit that shot in the corner, fading away and contested was great. It was a great shot and one of the top ones I’ve seen here.”

That shot keyed Indiana Wesleyan into the overtime period as IWU scored the first seven points for an 80-73 advantage. All seven points came in the first minute of the frame including a five point sequence in the first 16 seconds.

RJ Mahurin scored 16 seconds into overtime and a foul was called on Huntington during the play. The foul call led to a technical foul being called on the Huntington coach. Mahurin hit his one free throw from the initial foul while Weidner hit both of the technical foul free throws for a 78-73 lead. Weidner scored again on the next IWU possession for the seven point cushion.

The Foresters cut the deficit to 80-75 with less than two minutes left but on the next Wildcat possession Bob Peters was fouled. He hit both free throws for an 82-75 lead and the Foresters would get no closer.

“I’m proud of our guys,” said Tonagel. “They just battled and battled and battled and never quit tonight.”

Indiana Wesleyan was in an early hole and trailed 26-16 with 7 minutes left in the first half. IWU then charged to a 23-6 run to end the half and take a 39-32 lead into halftime.

Huntington turned the table on Indiana Wesleyan in the second half. Indiana Wesleyan led by 10 at 48-38 when Huntington exploded for a 24-7 run to turn a 10 point deficit into a 7 point advantage at 62-55 with more than 9 minutes to play in regulation. HU would not surrender their lead until the Weidner 3-pointer sent the game into overtime.

Weidner and Peters led all players with 22 points apiece. Weidner hit 4-of-6 from 3-point range while the 22 points for Peter is a career-high by 8 points. RJ Mahurin added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Indiana Wesleyan (13-4, 3-2 CL) held a sizable advantage at the free throw line by 19 attempts. IWU was 24-of-30 (80.0-percent) from the foul line while Huntington was only 6-of-11 (54.5-percent). Indiana Wesleyan also forced 24 Huntington turnovers to just 13 of their own.

“They were in foul trouble because Lane and RJ attacked,” said Tonagel. “They were aggressive and made some plays for us tonight. We came into the game with an aggressive mindset and we were able to get into the paint and make things happen.”

Indiana Wesleyan will remain on the road for their next game which is at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
