Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball scored the first 10 points today and never trailed en route to a 91-79 victory on the road at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio).
Zac Vandewater led the furious start for the Wildcats with seven of the 10 opening points, including a layup, a jump shot, and a 3-pointer. Vandewater finished the afternoon with 10 points.
Bob Peters drilled a 3-pointer with 4:01 left in the first half for a 12 point cushion at 39-27. But over the next two minutes Mount Vernon Nazarene cut the deficit to two points with a 10-0 run. Indiana Wesleyan made three free throws over the final 1:40 of the half to take a 42-37 lead into halftime.
Much like the first half the Wildcats dominated the opening minutes of the second half. The Wildcats started the period on a 16-4 spurt to gain an advantage of 58-41.IWU would methodically increase their lead to as many as 25 points, the last of those leads coming at 87-62 with 5:15 remaining.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (3-14, 0-6 CL) scored 17 of the final 21 points during the final five minutes to cut the 25 point difference down to the 12 point outcome of 91-79. The loss is the 13th straight for MVNU.
RJ Mahurin led the Wildcats with 21 points and 9 rebounds and was one of five IWU players in double figures. Peters contributed 19 points and 4 steals off the bench, Jordan Weidner added 13 points and 5 assists, DJ Bettinger finished with 12 points and 4 assists, and Vandewater ended with 10 points.
Indiana Wesleyan (14-4, 4-2 CL) shot 53.4-percent (31 of 58) on the afternoon and they shot a blistering 70.4-percent (19 of 27) during the second half. IWU also connected at a clip of 44.4-percent (8 of 18) from beyond the arc and 84.0-percent (21 of 25) from the foul line. Five Wildcats hit 3-pointers in the victory.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Luckey Arena on Tuesday for a special start time of 5 p.m. vs. Taylor (Ind.). Blake Whiteley, the artist who wrote and sings ‘IWU Anthem’ will perform during halftime of the game.
