Men?s Soccer Shuts Out Charleston, 3-0

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.V. -- A weekend of tough opponents has come to a close with a split for the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer team as they defeated University of Charleston 3-0 tonight in Charleston, West Virginia.

Indiana Wesleyan lost 1-0 to NAIA No. 9-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio) on Friday when the Red Storm recorded the only goal of the match in the 88th minute. Today, Indiana Wesleyan won a decisive 3-0 victory over NCAA Division II No. 11-ranked Charleston.

The Wildcats (2-1) squeezed the eventual game-winning goal in just before the halftime horn. As time was set to expire, Corey Lopez scored as he redirected a Geoff Bowman corner kick to give the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage at halftime. The goal for Lopez is his first of the season.

Second half scoring belonged to Sam Kane as he tallied both goals for Indiana Wesleyan early in the half. The goals are the first two for Kane in 2013.

His first scoring opportunity came five minutes into the second half. Keaton Albert served the ball towards the goal from the corner where Bowman headed the ball to Kane. The Kane score put Indiana Wesleyan ahead 2-0.

Five minutes later Kane and Albert would strike again. Albert led Kane for his second score as the Wildcats built a 3-0 advantage.

The three goals were more than enough for the goalkeeper combination of Zach Hammon and Josh Goepper. Hammon played the first 45 minutes while Goepper closed the shutout during the final 45 minutes.

The schedule does not get any easier for Indiana Wesleyan next weekend as IWU hosts a weekend tournament. Indiana Wesleyan will play No. 1-ranked and defending NAIA national champion Belhaven (Miss.) at 7 p.m. Friday night.
