Box Score 2 JOLIET, Ill. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball won one of their two games on Saturday to complete play at the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) Spring Tournament in Joliet, Illinois.
Following two wins on Friday, Indiana Wesleyan opened Saturday with a 6-4 loss to Ashford (Iowa) University and then defeated #RV Judson (Ill.) University 10-8 in eight innings. With the three wins on the weekend the Wildcats improve to 20-9 on the season.
In the first game Saturday, Ashford (14-13) scored three runs in the second inning for an early 3-0 advantage. Indiana Wesleyan tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning and gained the lead at 4-3 with a single run in the fourth. But Ashford responded with a three spot in the bottom of the fifth for the 6-4 lead.
Six Wildcats accounted for seven hits in the loss and four different players had one RBI. RF Jessica Hull ended the game at 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI while 1B Bryttany Van Vliet, SS Gabby Bogear, and CF Lauren Benda all tallied one hit and one run batted in for the Wildcats.
Gabby McIntire pitched the 6.0 inning complete game. She allowed six runs on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
The second game pitted two teams receiving votes in the NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top-25 Poll. The Wildcats pulled out the extra inning victory after the Eagles’ big comeback in the seventh inning.
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed in the game after one run in the first and five more in the second gave IWU a 6-0 lead. Indiana Wesleyan scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-4 lead into the final inning. But Judson (24-8) mounted a comeback and scored four in the frame to tie it at 8 and send the game into extra innings. IWU scored two in the top of the eighth and held on for the 10-8 win.
Bogear was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored while C Katie Smith was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. 3B Sam Hemming crushed a home run and was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and LF Michelle McGary hit 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
Tanna Hinthorne went the distance and allowed eight runs -- four earned -- in 8.0 innings. She gave up 14 hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Indiana Wesleyan returns home on Tuesday in a Crossroads League doubleheader with Marian (Ind.) University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
