Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Huntington (Ind.) University ruined Senior Day for the Indiana Wesleyan University softball team on Monday night at Wildcat Field.
The Foresters won both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 6-0 and 13-2 and in the process jumped over the Wildcats in the final Crossroads League standings. Huntington is now 10-8 in league play while Indiana Wesleyan is 9-9.
The Wildcat offense struggled mightily in the opener with a season-low one hit. Marissa French had the only hit for IWU when she hit a ringing double off the top of the fence in the second inning.
Huntington (20-16) did their damage early with one run in the second inning, three in the third, and two more in the fourth. Starting pitcher Emily Puterbaugh did the rest as she pitched the one-hit complete game shutout. She walked one and struck out 11 Wildcats.
Gabby McIntire took the loss for Indiana Wesleyan as she allowed a pair of earned runs in 5.0 innings. In relief, Tanna Hinthorne gave up four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.
In game two, Huntington scored in each of the first three innings to build an early 5-0 advantage. Indiana Wesleyan scored their only two runs of the day in the bottom of the second to draw within three at 5-2. But Huntington scored four runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings for the 13-2 final score.
Katie Smith and Lauren Benda paced the Wildcat offense with two hits apiece. Jessica Hull, Bryttany Van Vliet, and Allison Bexell all added one hit as IWU finished with seven for the game.
McIntire took the loss in 1.2 innings of work. She surrendered four unearned runs on five hits. Hinthorne pitched the final 5.1 innings in relief and gave up nine runs -- just two earned -- on eight hits.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play in the Crossroads League Tournament. That takes place Wednesday and Thursday at Marian (Ind.) University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
