Box Score 2 MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Indiana Wesleyan University used some explosive hitting today to win a pair of mercy rule wins at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
Both ends of the doubleheader lasted six innings. IWU won the opening contest 12-2 and then completed the sweep with a 12-4 victory.
In the first game of the day the Cougars struck first with two runs in the second inning off starting pitcher Gabby McIntire. McIntire would not allow another run as she pitched all 6.0 innings. Both runs were unearned and McIntire allowed six hits and two walks along with four strikeouts.
After Mount Vernon Nazarene took the 2-0 lead, Indiana Wesleyan responded with runs in each of their next four times at bat. The biggest of those innings was the third inning with a five spot, followed by innings of one, three, and three as the lead grew to 12-2 for the mercy rule win.
Six Wildcats finished with multi-hit efforts as Indiana Wesleyan outhit Mount Vernon Nazarene 14-6. McIntire led the way with three hits and two runs scored. Bryttany Van Vliet was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI while Marissa French was 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI. Katie Smith, Allison Bexell, and Gabby Bogear all accounted for two hits apiece while Sam Hemming crushed a 3-run home run and scored three times.
Game two was much of the same for the Wildcats with a 12 run, 12 hit effort. Nine Wildcats recorded at least one hit as French, Van Vliet, and Bogear all added two hits. French hit a home run and had three RBI while Bogear added a pair of walks to her two hits. Hemming, Bogear, Smith, and Bexell each had a double in the win.
Indiana Wesleyan built a 3-0 lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning. Mount Vernon Nazarene tied the game at 3 in the fifth, but Indiana Wesleyan tallied a nine spot in the sixth for the mercy rule victory.
Tanna Hinthorne was the beneficiary of the 12 run effort from the Wildcats. She allowed four runs in the game but only one was earned. She gave up eight hits and two walks in the game and struck out six Cougars.
Indiana Wesleyan is next scheduled to play at 5 p.m. on Wednesday night at Wildcat Field. The doubleheader will be against Grace (Ind.) College.
