Box Score 2 GOSHEN, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University softball team used some big bats on Monday to win both ends of the doubleheader at Goshen (Ind.) College by 5-inning mercy rule.
The Wildcats swept the Maple Leafs by scores of 11-3 and 10-2. The offensive output was charged by four home runs, including two by Sam Hemming. The two wins improve the IWU record to 24-11 on the season and 6-4 in the Crossroads League.
In the opening game Goshen scored first with a run in second inning. But a two run third inning put Indiana Wesleyan on top for good. IWU essentially ended the game in the fourth with a big nine run effort to lead 11-1 before Goshen scored twice in the fifth and final inning.
Hemming hit one home run in the victory and was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Lauren Benda was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and three runs while Katie Smith reached base three times with two hits and a walk.
Gabby McIntire collected the 5.0 inning complete game victory. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one Maple Leaf.
The bats transitioned right into the second game from where they left off at the end of the first game. IWU wrapped out six runs in the opening frame and was never threatened by the host team. Goshen (4-20, 4-10 CL) scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the first but Indiana Wesleyan got those two runs right back in the next half inning for an 8-2 lead. IWU capped the day with a two run fourth for the 10-2 victory.
Tanna Hinthorne was the winnings pitcher as she gave up two runs on seven hits. She walked five and struck out five in the 5.0 inning complete game.
Hemming torched her second home run of the day and was 2-for-4 just like the first game. Bryttany Van Vliet hit a home run and added four RBI while Benda was the third Wildcat to homer in the game and she finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Michelle McGary and Marissa French each had multi-hit efforts as Indiana Wesleyan outhit Goshen 11-7.
Indiana Wesleyan (24-11, 6-4 CL) has a quick turnaround and will play again tomorrow. IWU hosts Huntington (Ind.) University at 5 p.m. with the league games being played at Wildcat Field.
