Southeastern Sweeps Softball in Florida Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The final games in Florida did not go as Indiana Wesleyan University softball hoped as Southeastern (Fla.) University earned a doubleheader sweep by scores of 6-3 and 9-1 in Lakeland.

Indiana Wesleyan (9-4) ends their Florida portion of their Spring Break trip with a 5-3 mark. IWU has one more doubleheader remaining this week which will be at Roosevelt (Ill.) University in Chicago, Illinois on Friday at 11 a.m.

It was a family reunion on Wednesday for Wildcat head coach Steve Babinski. His sister Anna Welsh is a first year head coach of Southeastern after previously working at Bethel (Ind.) College.

In the opener, Indiana Wesleyan struck quickly with a pair of runs. IWU loaded the bases without any outs but an infield popup and a fielder’s choice to home quickly had Indiana Wesleyan with two outs and no runs in. Allison Bexell came through with the clutch single to score Katie Smith and Jessica Hull for an early 2-0 lead.

Southeastern (9-6) cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning. In the fifth, Southeastern exploded for four runs on four hits to lead 5-2 and made it 6-2 in the sixth.

Indiana Wesleyan was able to make it close in the seventh inning. Marissa French and Bryttany Van Vliet each hit one out singles before Bexell hit an RBI single to bring the tying run to bat with only one out. But Indiana Wesleyan could not get the ball out of the infield as Southeastern earned the 6-3 victory.

Southeastern earned the mercy rule victory in five innings in the second game by a 9-1 score.

The Flames scored twice in the second inning as the Wildcats answered with one in the top of the third. Hull hit an RBI single in the third to score Lauren Benda. Unfortunately for the Wildcats that would be the last run of the day. The Flames scored two in the third and five in the fourth for the 9-1 win.
