SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Unranked Indiana Wesleyan University took No. 3-ranked Biola (Calif.) to four sets on Tuesday in the first of three pool play matches at the 2013 NAIA Volleyball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Biola (23-3), the top seed in Pool C, won the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-17. Indiana Wesleyan was able to steal the third set by a 28-26 score before Biola won the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Indiana Wesleyan (29-11) still has a chance to advance to the next phase of the tournament as IWU plays single matches on Wednesday and Thursday. The top two teams from each of the six pools advance to a 12-team single elimination tournament beginning on Friday.
Rae Brandes finished Tuesday with 12 kills, 14 digs, and three block assists. Christiana Tavo was the only other Wildcat with more than five kills as she ended the match with nine. Remy Bucknor and Kristine Egebrecht each added five finishers while Sarah Collicott and Kristin Predajna both tallied four kills.
Katey Holler assisted on 37 of the 39 Wildcat kills today. Rebecca Brandes served a pair of aces while Holler and Raina Troyer each totaled one.
Defensively, Indiana Wesleyan blocked 10 Biola shots and was led by Bucknor with two solo and four block assists. Rebecca Brandes collected 19 digs and 40 receptions while her sister Rae had the 14 digs plus she was perfect on 43 receptions.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action tomorrow night against No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the second pool play match of the tournament. The contest begins at 9 p.m. ET in Sioux City.
