Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. -- It was a wild affair in Richmond, Indiana tonight as No. 2-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball defeated IU East 123-103.
“I have never been involved in a game where we give up over 100 points and still win by 20,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel in his postgame interview on WBAT 1400 AM.
The 123 points is the most by an Indiana Wesleyan squad since winning a 111-67 game at IU East on December 17, 2007. The program record for points in a game is 136 which came in a win over Robert Morris (Ill.) in 1994.
Six Wildcats scored in double figures tonight. Leading all players was senior forward RJ Mahurin with 32 points and senior guard Jordan Weidner added 28 points, two points shy of his career high. Mahurin hit 14-of-19 shots tonight en route to his 32 points while Weidner nailed 9-of-14 shots. Mahurin also earned game-highs of 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.
DJ Bettinger netted a career-best 20 points which is six more than his previous high of 14 from last season. Freshman forward Nate Bubash added 12 points, freshman guard Bob Peters also had 12 points, and junior guard Zac Vandewater scored 10 points.
Four Wildcats dished out at least four assists on Tuesday as IWU had 24 total. Weidner led all players with six assists while Bettinger and Vandewater each had five and Mahurin earned four.
Indiana Wesleyan (3-0) shot a blistering 62.0-percent from the field as the team hit 44-of-71 of their shots. IWU finished at 50.0-percent from 3-point range on 18 attempts and 78.8-percent (26 of 33) from the free throw line. Indiana Wesleyan dominated the paint tonight as they outscored IU East 68-30 in the post.
IU East (1-2) shot 47.3-percent (35 of 74) in the loss and 57.9-percent (11 of 19) from range.
Through three games this season, Indiana Wesleyan is averaging 104 points per game. Indiana Wesleyan has twice broken the century mark which they did not do once last season. The last time IWU scored 100 or more points in a game twice in a season was 2007-08.
Indiana Wesleyan will play this weekend in the Crossroads League/WHAC Challenge hosted by Spring Arbor (Mich.). Indiana Wesleyan plays Cornerstone (Mich.) on Friday and Aquinas (Mich.) on Saturday.
