Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Two top-10 teams clashed today at the Grace (Ind.) Classic in Winona Lake, Indiana as No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan dominated No. 9-ranked St. Xavier (Ill.) 89-62.
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed Friday afternoon and led by as many as 20 points in the first half and 31 points in the second half. Indiana Wesleyan remains unbeaten at 5-0 while St. Xavier loses for the first time and is 2-1 on the season. One of the two wins for St. Xavier was over NCAA Division I foe Illinois-Chicago.
Through the first five and a half minutes the Cougars kept the game close and tied the contest for the fourth time at 12-12. But Erika Isham hit one of two free throws to spur a 10-0 Wildcat run. Isham scored seven of the 10 points and finished the day with a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Indiana Wesleyan continued to pour it on in the first half and Jessica Brown drilled her third 3-pointer of the half to give IWU a 20 point advantage at 46-26 with 1:55 remaining. Brown would tie for a game-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting and a perfect 3-of-3 from distance. The 19 points is a new career-best performance and 12 more than her previous high.
The Wildcats went into half leading 48-30 and then started the second half on a 14-3 run to lead 62-33. Chelsea Winner hit a free throw to increase the lead to 75-44 with 6:59 remaining. The 31 point cushion was the largest of the game.
Val Sohasky was the third and final Wildcat in double figures this afternoon, joining Brown and Isham. Her 13 points also tied a career-high set on Saturday against Wilberforce. 15 Wildcats played today and 13 registered points.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 56.0-percent (28 of 50) from the field and 60.0-percent (6 of 10) from the 3-point line. IWU also won the battle of the boards 37-25 and held a 25 shot advantage from the free throw line. Indiana Wesleyan hit 65.9-percent (27 of 41) from the stripe while St. Xavier finished at a clip of 81.3-percent (13 of 16).
Tomorrow, Indiana Wesleyan has their third consecutive NAIA ranked opponent. IWU will play No. 21 Purdue Calumet (Ind.) at 10 a.m. in the Grace Classic.
