Taylor Rallies Late to Tie Men?s Soccer

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) shocked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer on Tuesday night with a pair of late goals as the teams finished with a 2-2 draw on a rainy Wildcat Field.

The Trojans (3-10-3, 2-5-1 CL) scored two goals in the final 6 minutes 40 seconds to overcome a two goal deficit. The tie coupled with wins tonight by Spring Arbor (Mich.) and Saint Francis (Ind.) leaves the three teams in a three-way tie for first place in the Crossroads League with one match left to play.

“I thought we were in control of the game,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. “We got up 2-0 with about 15 minutes left and let Taylor get back in it. The really disappointing thing is the set pieces. Defending set pieces has been our Achilles heel. We should be very good at defending those with as big and as strong as we are and with as much focus as we put on it.”

Danny Cawley cut the deficit to one for Taylor with a goal in the 84th minute and David Maldonado tied it in the 89th minute with 1:20 left in regulation. Both goals came off set pieces. Taylor nearly won the match with less than 10 seconds left in the second overtime on a set piece. An Indiana Wesleyan foul was called at midfield and the resulting free kick eventually found the ball hitting the post and then out of bounds.

Indiana Wesleyan(10-3-3, 5-0-3 CL) had multiple chances in overtime to win the game. The best of those came in the 106th minute when a ball crossed through the box in front of the Taylor goal. Jacob Beerman was on the other side and as he tried to bring the ball out of the air towards the wide open goal but the ball would end up going wide of the net.

“We had opportunities in overtime to win the game,” said Castro. “There were wet conditions but I am not going to make any excuses for our guys. We just didn’t adapt and control the ball as well as we wanted to on those opportunities and put the ball in the back of the net.”

Midway through the first half a steady rainfall would come over Wildcat Field. Slippery field conditions worsened with the rain throughout the evening.

Neither team scored in the first half as Indiana Wesleyan controlled the tempo. IWU held a 6-1 advantage in shots during the half and put two of those shots on goal.

Indiana Wesleyan scored the first goal of the match in the 63rd minute as Geoff Bowman knocked home a pass that Evan Young crossed from the other side of the box. Josh Schultz quickly upped the score to 2-0 in the 67th minute on his first collegiate goal. It came on a Geoff Bowman free kick near the corner just outside the 18-yard box.

“The stage is now set for a massive game on Saturday,” continued Castro. “I know Spring Arbor will be amped up to be here on Senior Day. We’ll be ready. We have three days to prepare for Spring Arbor and tighten up the things we need to. It all comes down to Saturday.”

The match with Spring Arbor begins at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Field in the regular season finale. A win for either team will guarantee at least a share of the Crossroads League regular season championship.
