Box Score MARION, Ind. -- It was a night to celebrate the senior class and a Crossroads League victory over visiting Bethel (Ind.) on Friday night for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer team.
Senior Night featured a come-from-behind victory for the Wildcats with two second half goals for a 2-1 win. After the match, the six player senior class was honored. This year’s senior class consisted of: Jessie Craig, Rachel Fulkerson, Erica Schmeltz, Kendra Smith, Janelle Sproul, and Sarah Wilkins.
The victory keeps Indiana Wesleyan (7-6-1) in the chase for a top-four spot in the Crossroads League standings. IWU has 12 points with a 4-3-0 record and is tied with Huntington (Ind.), Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), and Saint Francis (Ind.) for third place. IWU has now played once more than those three teams as they battle for a top-four spot to host a Crossroads League Tournament First Round match.
Indiana Wesleyan would double up Bethel (5-8-2, 2-5-0) in shots during the opening 45 minutes but was unable to solve the BC defense as neither team scored in the opening half.
Bethel struck first with a goal by Meagan McPherson in the 53rd minute for a 1-0 advantage. That lead lasted less than eight minutes as Indiana Wesleyan found the game-tying goal when Nicole Biggs assisted Jordan Harris for the equalizer in the 61st minute.
Eight minutes later Indiana Wesleyan struck with the game-winning goal in the 69th minute. Tracey Tiernon sent a crossing pass from the left side of the box that found its way past multiple Bethel defenders and to the foot of Paige LaBonne who smashed a one-timer past the BC keeper for the 2-1 lead.
Once the Wildcats gained the lead Fulkerson and the defense would take care of the rest. IWU allowed just two Pilot shots in the second half and Fulkerson made the save on the only one that found its way on net. Fulkerson ended the night with three saves on four BC shots on goal.
Indiana Wesleyan will finish the regular season with two road matches next week. IWU plays at No. 8-ranked Spring Arbor (Mich.) on Wednesday night and then at Saint Francis on Saturday.
