Men's Soccer Stuns Holy Cross with Wild Comeback Win

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Three goals in the final 8 minutes 20 seconds sent the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team to a stunning 3-2 victory over visiting Holy Cross (Ind.) College at Wildcat Field.

Holy Cross scored goals in the 39th and 65th minutes to maintain a 2-0 heading into the final 10 minutes of the competition. But a wild array of events led to a stunning come-from-behind victory for Indiana Wesleyan.

Geoff Bowman opened the process with an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute to cut the deficit in half 2-1. Bowman then assisted on a Corey Lopez goal just 2:02 later to suddenly tie the match 2-2 with a little over six minutes remaining.

But that was still plenty of time for some Indiana Wesleyan theatrics in regulation. With 1:40 remaining on the clock, Sam Kane finished the shocking comeback with an unassisted goal to cap the three goal outburst for the 3-2 Wildcat win.

Indiana Wesleyan needed to make the comeback despite dominating the stat line on Saturday. IWU held a 19-8 advantage in shots -- including 11-4 in the second half -- and 9-4 in shots on goal. They also doubled up Holy Cross by a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.

Zach Hammon was credited with the victory in goal for the Wildcats. He relieved starter Josh Goepper for the final 20:08 and did not even face a shot from Holy Cross. Goepper surrendered two goals on four shots on goal in 69:52 of action.

Indiana Wesleyan improves their mark to 3-1-1 this season while Holy Cross drops to 1-2-0.

The Wildcats return to the pitch next week for the Bethel Classic in Mishawaka, Indiana. IWU battles University of Saint Francis (Ill.) on Friday, September 14 at 5 p.m. and then Bellevue (Neb.) College on Saturday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m.
