Box Score MARION, Ind. -- There were three unbeaten volleyball teams in the Crossroads League entering weekend play but now there are none after No. 11-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University beat Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) on Friday and then No. 18-ranked Taylor (Ind.) today.
Indiana Wesleyan (12-1, 5-1 Crossroads) beat its Grant County rival 3-1 inside Luckey Arena as Taylor was the last unbeaten team left in the league. IWU is now one of three teams at 5-1 atop the Crossroads League.
"We really challenged the girls and they did a super job," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Candace Moats on the Wildcats play this weekend. "They watched film and came in Friday and Saturday preparing for these matches. So I really appreciate their willingness to give their time for what we're trying to do."
The Wildcats came out quickly and put the Trojans in a 2-0 hole with a pair of dominant games. IWU won the opener 25-11 and then won the second game 25-18.
But Taylor (10-3, 5-1 Crossroads) fought back with a game three victory by a score of 25-21.
"Brittany Smith (Taylor head coach) is always good at making adjustments," said Moats. "They really stepped up their game big time and starting exposing us in some aspects of our game. She's a great coach and is going to find what our defensive scheme is and know how to beat it."
Indiana Wesleyan took control early in game four and midway through the game expanded the lead to 17-10. Taylor responded with seven straight points to storm back and tie the game 17-17.
"We need to stay composed and stay as a community," said Moats about the Taylor comeback. "You can't lose composure or focus when things get hard. It was definitely a battle."
The Wildcats did stay composed and answered with the next three points and five of the next six to lead 22-18. IWU then held for the rest of the game for the 25-22 win.
"We stayed composed," said Indiana Wesleyan junior outside hitter Rae Brandes. "We know we can battle so we didn't let that Taylor run affect us."
Brandes led all players on Saturday with 12 kills in addition to 16 digs and two aces. Senior outside hitter Rachel Quackenbush added 11 kills while junior middle hitter Kristine Egebrecht contributed 10 kills and four service aces. Senior setter Yui Iwase earned 40 assists as well as 11 digs.
Indiana Wesleyan remains home for their thirds straight match. IWU will host Spring Arbor (Mich.) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19 in Luckey Arena.
