Long Day Finishes with 2-2 Draw for Men's Soccer

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. -- The scheduled start time for tonight's Indiana Wesleyan University versus Houghton (N.Y.) College men's soccer match was scheduled for 5 p.m. at Wildcat Field.

Add water -- lots of water -- and everything changed. Approximately three inches of rain flooded Wildcat Field and the game was eventually played at Taylor (Ind.) University on their field turf in Upland, Indiana a bit after 9 p.m.

With a four plus hour delay, the match would be extended even more as regulation and two overtimes were not be enough as Indiana Wesleyan and Houghton played to a 2-2 draw. The match ended shortly before midnight.

Indiana Wesleyan would be the first to strike in the game's eighth minute. Freshman Keaton Albert made his collegiate debut with a bang as he scored early for the 1-0 advantage.

The lead held for 14 minutes until Houghton struck with a pair of quick goals. The Highlanders scored goals in the 22nd and 23rd minutes -- just 1:27 apart -- to suddenly capture a 2-1 lead. That would be the score when the team's headed off the field for intermission.

The Wildcats scored the equalizer in the 59th minute from another freshman. Corey Lopez tallied the score for his second goal in as many nights. That would be the final score of the evening as neither team could find the back of the net over the final 30 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10 minute overtimes.

Junior Zach Hammon made nine saves on the evening for the Wildcats. Houghton outshot Indiana Wesleyan 18-14 and held an 11-6 margin on shots on goal.

Indiana Wesleyan now stands at 2-1-1 this season while Houghton is 0-1-1.

The Wildcats will return to the pitch for another pair of weekend games on September 7-8 at Wildcat Field. IWU hosts Cornerstone (Mich.) University on Friday night and Holy Cross (Ind.) College on Saturday. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
