Bowman, Lopez Score in Men's Soccer Home Opening Win

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- A pair of second half goals gave the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team a 2-0 victory tonight over visiting Judson (Ill.) University at Wildcat Field.

After being stymied by the Judson trapping defense through the first 56 minutes of play, Indiana Wesleyan broke it twice for goals just four minutes apart.

"You could see the frustration on the field and on the bench," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro on the many offside calls early. "But the staff told the guys not to get upset because it only takes one, one mistake from their back line in trying to trap."

And that's what finally happened in the 57th minute when junior midfielder Geoff Bowman broke through the Eagles' defensive unit. He split the backline and was one-on-one with the keeper and chipped it over him just inside the 18-yard box on the challenge.

"Geoff recognized the trap and ran right through which was very smart on his part," added Castro. "Geoff Bowman put the team on his shoulders and was able to get the first goal. That was huge for us."

Just four minutes later Corey Lopez found himself all alone with the Judson keeper following a through ball by Bowman. Lopez got in deep, deked the keeper and easily put the ball to the back of the net.

"Corey's delayed run for the second goal allowed him to go in without any pressure," continued Castro. "He showed some class by beating their goalkeeper, who I thought was their best player as he kept them in the game. It's nice to see the freshman go up against a senior goalkeeper and use some composure and get right around him."

The Eagles' trapping defense frustrated the Wildcats early with many of the nine offside calls coming before the two goals. But the Wildcats found that one mistake and took it to the goal for the victory.

"If you want to live by the sword then you're going to die by the sword as well," said Castro. "And their back line kind of felt that tonight."

Judson outshot Indiana Wesleyan by a slim 9-8 margin and also held a 5-4 margin in shots on goal. Junior Zach Hammon made five saves in goal for Indiana Wesleyan for the shutout.

"I love the fact that we got the result," added Castro. "This is the first time as a coach I've ever beaten Judson so it's been eight years. Coach Burke always found a way to be on the winning side so this hits close to home as a step in the right direction."

Indiana Wesleyan has little time to celebrate the victory as they play again tomorrow. IWU hosts Houghton (N.Y.) College at 5 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
