Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- It was a flawless debut for the 2012 version of the Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball team with a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Lee Invitational in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Indiana Wesleyan did not drop a set on Saturday in victories over Union (Ky.) College and No. 20-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College. IWU won the first match with Union by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 and finished the weekend with a sweep of Lindsey Wilson by scores of 25-19, 25-11, 25-21.
The pair of wins on Saturday come less than 24 hours after Indiana Wesleyan earned the victory 3-1 over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University in the first match of the season and then a huge 3-2 win over No. 3-ranked Lee (Tenn.) University. It is the first time Indiana Wesleyan has started a season 4-0 since 2007, as that team won its first seven contests.
Junior Rae Brandes continues her excellent start to the 2012 season with a double-double and nearly a second on Saturday. She finished with a match-high 14 kills and was second with 11 digs versus Union. Brandes also contributed two aces and a block assist. In the finale versus Lindsey Wilson, Brandes added another match-high with 12 kills plus nine digs and two more service aces.
In the Union victory, Indiana Wesleyan hit .320 as a team and served five aces. IWU also held a 41-25 advantage in digs.
Senior setter Yui Iwase earned 44 assists, junior libero Rebecca Brandes totaled a contest-best 14 digs, and sophomore middle blocker Kristine Egebrecht assisted on both Wildcat blocks.
Against Lindsey Wilson, the Wildcats once again hit over .300 as a team at a .303 clip on 39 kills. In game two, Indiana Wesleyan was especially efficient with 11 kills and one error in 20 chances for a .500 attack percentage. Defensively, the Wildcats were credited with 7.5 blocks. Egebrecht had one solo and three block assists while sophomore opposite hitter Alijah Mulitauopele added a solo and two block assists.
Iwase assisted on 36 kills and also had five digs, an ace and a block assist. Egebrecht added eight kills, freshman middle blocker Kristin Predajna earned seven, and Mulitauopele and sophomore outside hitter Cheyenne Godinez both finished with six.
Indiana Wesleyan will look to continue their hot start next weekend at home in the IWU/Taylor Crossover Challenge. IWU will play in four games during the weekend invitational.
