Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball is half way to the NAIA National Championship following a pair of wins Wednesday at the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament in Marion, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan (42-11), the tournament's No. 2-seed, defeated No. 7 Grace (Ind.) College by a 10-3 margin and followed with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. Indiana Wesleyan needs just two more wins to capture the MCC championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
IWU will battle No. 4 Marian (Ind.) University at 10 a.m. tomorrow to determine which team will advance to the conference championship game. The loser of the game will have to win an elimination game to earn their spot in the final game.
In the first game on Wednesday, the Lancers pulled ahead of the Wildcats with a three run fourth inning. The 3-1 lead did not last long as the Wildcats put up a nine spot in the bottom half of the fourth inning for a 10-3 advantage.
The first nine batters reached base in the inning. Indiana Wesleyan tallied seven hits, a walk, and two Grace errors in the inning.
Centerfielder Tamara Davis reached base all four times, including a first inning home run. She finished 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and two RBIs. Catcher Katie Smith added three hits and two RBIs as Indiana Wesleyan outhit Grace 12-6 in the game.
Abbie Forman earned the win in a three-run complete game effort. She allowed six hits and two walks while striking out nine.
After a conclusive first game, Indiana Wesleyan went toe-to-toe in a pitcher's duel with Spring Arbor in the second contest.
Spring Arbor scored their run in the top of the first inning with a two-out RBI double. The lead would not last long as Indiana Wesleyan scored their two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Smith was hit by a pitch and first baseman Jessica Hull doubled to deep right-center field to put both runners in scoring position. With two outs, leftfielder Sam Hemming stroked a single to left that scored both runners for the 2-1 lead.
The top of the fourth inning featured Lancer base runners on first and second with two outs in their best chance to score the rest of the game. But Forman induced a swinging strike three to end the threat. Over the final three innings, Forman allowed just one single to close out the Lancers.
Forman allowed one run in seven innings on five hits, one walk, and seven punch-outs.
Smith, Hull, Hemming, third baseman Bryttany Van Vliet, and second baseman Gabby McIntire accounted for all five Indiana Wesleyan hits in the win.
