Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- For just the ninth time in program history the Indiana Wesleyan University softball team hit the 30-win plateau in a season after sweeping a doubleheader with Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University in Marion, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan won the games by scores of 8-4 and 8-3. The wins move IWU to 31-7 on the season and 9-1 in the Mid-Central College Conference play.
In the first game Indiana Wesleyan seemed to have the game in hand leading 5-0 as Mount Vernon Nazarene came to bat in the top of the sixth inning. MVNU plated four runs in the frame to suddenly trail by just one run at 5-4.
But the Wildcats put the game away in the bottom half of the sixth with three runs for an 8-4 advantage. Rightfielder Erin Moeller scored on a passed ball for the first run of the inning. First baseman Jessica Hull hit an RBI single and then catcher Katie Smith scored on a double steal for the final run of the inning.
Starting pitcher Abbie Forman retired the side in order in the seventh for the 30th victory of the season. Forman surrendered four runs on eight hits in seven innings. She walked one and struck out seven.
Jessica Hull was 2-for-4 with three RBI and second baseman Kristina Ross was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs. Designated player Dana Runyan finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and centerfielder Tamara Davis added a 2-for-4 game with a double.
Game two was very similar to the first game as Indiana Wesleyan jumped out early with a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. Mount Vernon Nazarene trimmed the deficit to one with a two spot in the fifth inning.
The next half inning Indiana Wesleyan scored four runs to widen their lead to 7-2. Jessica Hull opened the inning with a home run. Leftfielder Kelsey Decker had a big two-run single to right field while Kristina Ross grounded out to score a run for the final tally of the inning.
Both teams scored one run in the sixth inning as the game finished with an 8-3 outcome.
Forman allowed three runs -- one earned -- in the five hit complete game. She walked two Cougars while striking out eight to improve to 23-3 on the season.
Jessica Hull, Abbie Forman, and Kelsey Decker each contributed three hits apiece in the victory. Forman and Decker each had two RBI while Dana Runyan smacked her third double on Saturday.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play at Bethel (Ind.) College on Tuesday, April 10 at 3 p.m. The games will be contested at Mishawaka, Indiana.
