Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- It took Indiana Wesleyan University 11 innings in the second game of the softball doubleheader with Spring Arbor (Mich.) University to put the final touches on a sweep Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan cruised to an 8-1 victory in the opener and took game two 5-4 in 11 innings. The wins improve the Indiana Wesleyan record to 29-7 on the season and 7-1 in Mid-Central College Conference play.
The Wildcats looked primed to win the second game in seven innings. But the seventh inning opened on an inauspicious start when an easy fly ball landed between three Wildcats. That run would come around and score to tie the game 2-2.
Spring Arbor (9-19, 1-3 MCC) captured the lead in the top of the eighth inning on two hits and one error. But Indiana Wesleyan recouped that run in the bottom of the inning. Second baseman Spencer Ferrin hit an infield single and stole second base. She would later score with two outs on a Jessica Hull ground ball. The ball was booted allowing Ferrin to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams scored in the 10th inning courtesy of the runner beginning at second base because of the international tie breaker rule. On the first play in the top of the 11th, the SAU runner on second was called out for running into shortstop Emily Sell as Spring Arbor did not score in the inning.
Indiana Wesleyan took advantage. Sell laid down a sac bunt to send Gabby McIntire to third base to begin the inning. After Abbie Forman popped out to second for the second out, leftfielder Kelsey Decker singled to left field for the walk-off hit.
DP Dana Runyan was 3-of-5 at the plate while Spencer Ferrin was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Centerfielder Tamara Davis and Kelsey Decker each contributed two hits in the game as Indiana Wesleyan had 13 overall.
Abbie Forman pitched all 11 innings as she improved to 21-3 on the season. She allowed four runs -- three earned -- on 11 hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.
The Wildcats had little resistance from the Cougars in the opener. IWU scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second to gain a 5-0 lead after two. The lead ballooned to 7-0 in the fifth before winning 8-1.
Tamara Davis finished 3-of-4 from the dish and was a home run shy of the cycle. Davis scored three times and added two RBI. Catcher Katie Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and one knocked in while Jessica Hull was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Abbie Forman was stellar on the mound in five innings of work. She allowed no runs on just two hits. Forman did now walk a batter and struck out eight Cougars in the win. Gabby McIntire pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on two hits.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play at 1 p.m. on Saturday versus Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University. That doubleheader will be played at Wildcat Field.
