Box Score 2 SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball won their first game and lost the second game at the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament in Spring Arbor, Michigan.
Indiana Wesleyan (40-11), the No. 1-seed in the four-team double-elimination tournament, defeated No. 4-seed Grace (Ind.) College 7-3 in the first game of the day. In the final contest, Indiana Wesleyan lost 6-0 to No. 2-seed Cedarville (Ohio) University.
Cedarville (33-19) advances to the NCCAA Midwest Regional championship game. They will play the winner of Indiana Wesleyan and No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. The winner between IWU and Spring Arbor will need to defeat Cedarville twice to earn the region's automatic bid to the national tournament.
The Wildcats scored in six of the seven innings against the Lancers for the 7-3 win. IWU scored a single run in the first two innings and the final three innings while plating two in the fourth.
Abbie Forman pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings. Forman walked just one and struck out seven Lancers.
Rightfielder Erin Moeller was 2-for-2 at the dish with a double and four RBI while centerfielder Tamara Davis was 2-for-4 with a steal and three runs scored. Third baseman Bryttany Van Vliet added a 2-for-3 day at the plate while shortstop Emily Sell scored three times.
The victory over Grace (10-42) was No. 40 on the season for Indiana Wesleyan. That sets a new school record, breaking the old record of 39 which was done in three consecutive seasons from 2005-07.
Cedarville dominated in the second game of the day for Indiana Wesleyan. Cedarville scored two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to open up a 5-0 lead. They added one last run in the sixth for the 6-0 victory.
The Yellow Jackets outhit the Wildcats 13-4. Davis earned half of the Wildcats' hits with two doubles. Catcher Katie Smith added a third IWU double and Moeller singled for the four Wildcat base hits.
In the bottom of the fifth, Abbie Forman and Cedarville centerfielder Kelsey Wilson had a titanic battle. The at bat lasted 30 pitches with the last 16 being fouled off by Wilson until she singled over Van Vliet at third base. During the at bat, Wilson fouled off 25 pitches.
Forman would pitch five innings and 148 pitches in the game. She allowed five runs on 12 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Indiana Wesleyan and Spring Arbor will open Saturday play at 10 a.m. with the right to play Cedarville in the championship on the line.
