Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- All kinds of good things happened for the Indiana Wesleyan University softball team on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan swept University of Saint Francis (Ind.) by scores of 3-0 and 8-6. The wins clinch at least a second place finish for IWU in the Mid-Central College Conference. Indiana Wesleyan ties the program record for wins in a season with 39, previously done three straight years from 2005-07. And all this happened on Senior Day for four Wildcats seniors: Tamara Davis, Kelsey Decker, Abbie Forman, and Erin Moeller.
The pair of wins moves Indiana Wesleyan to 14-4 in the MCC which guarantees no worse than a second place finish. IWU has completed its regular season while other than Bethel (Ind.) College, every other team in the conference already has at least four losses with more games left to be played.
Abbie Forman was stellar in Game 1 as she allowed just three hits and two walks in the complete game. She did not allow a run and struck out 10 Cougars for her 30th victory this season.
Designated player Dana Runyan came through with the big hit in the third inning. With two out and the bases loaded, Runyan ripped a pitch to deep leftfield that scored two as Indiana Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan tacked on another run in the fifth. Centerfielder Tamara Davis reached on a bunt single, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Catcher Katie Smith then doubled off the right field wall to score Davis for a 3-0 advantage.
Davis was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and Runyan was 1-for-3 with two RBI. The Wildcats outhit the Cougars 6-3.
After a pitching dominated first game, Game 2 was controlled by the bats with a combined 14 runs on 20 hits that Indiana Wesleyan won 8-6.
Following a 3-run third inning by Saint Francis to tie the score 3-3, Indiana Wesleyan responded in a big way. Indiana Wesleyan scored five to reclaim the lead 8-3. IWU used four hits and three Saint Francis errors for the big inning.
In the fifth inning, Saint Francis cut the deficit in half with one run for an 8-4 game. The scored would remain such until a scary seventh inning of play.
The Cougars scored two runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6 while USF also had the bases loaded and just one out. But Forman struck out the next Cougar and then induced a pop up to shortstop Emily Sell to end the game.
Smith was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Davis added a 3-for-4 performance with a triple, two runs, and two batted in while second baseman Kristina Ross was 2-for-3 with a run and a steal.
Indiana Wesleyan will next take the field on Friday, April 27 at the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. The regional will be hosted by Spring Arbor (Mich.) University.
