Box Score 1 MARION, Ind. -- Although rain won game two the Indiana Wesleyan University softball team won the first game with a 3-1 victory over visiting Asbury (Ky.) University today at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan had built a 4-1 lead during the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Bryttany Van Vliet. But the rains came down before the inning was completed and no sixth inning stats were official. After a short delay, the game was called and game two was wiped out.
The Wildcats improve to 34-9 on the season and are now tied for fourth all-time in wins in program history. IWU won 39 games in each of the 2005-07 seasons and went 34-20 in 2004.
Catcher Katie Smith quickly put Indiana Wesleyan on top with a first inning home run. Indiana Wesleyan would add another run in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Centerfielder Tamara Davis singled up the middle, stole second, and later scored on a throwing error by the Asbury shortstop.
Asbury cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. The Eagles opened the inning with a pair of singles which was followed by a sac bunt. A single scored one Asbury run but the next batter popped out to Jessica Hull at first base and she doubled up the runner for the unassisted double play.
Indiana Wesleyan would recapture a two run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Rightfielder Erin Moeller and second baseman Kristina Ross each singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. But the next two Wildcats recorded outs without advancing either runner. Jessica Hull came up and hit a two-out single up the middle to score Moeller for the 3-1 advantage.
Designated player Dana Runyan was 2-for-3 on the day while five other Wildcats tallied one hit apiece. Katie Smith and Jessica Hull were both credited with runs batted in.
Abbie Forman improved to 26-5 on the mound for the Wildcats. She scattered seven hits over five innings of work. She did not walk an Eagle and struck out one.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 as IWU hosts Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University.
