Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball traveled to Adrian, Michigan today to battle Siena Heights (Mich.) University in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Wildcats took both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 10-2 and 4-3. The wins move the Wildcats to 33-9 on the season.
Indiana Wesleyan received a lot of production from the top of the order in the five-inning mercy rule win in game one. IWU was 9-of-12 from the top four spots in the lineup as centerfielder Tamara Davis, catcher Katie Smith, first baseman Jessica Hull, and designated player Dana Runyan each collected two hits apiece. Michelle McGary got in on the action with a pinch-hit single for Runyan.
Starting pitcher Abbie Forman was the recipient of all the run support. Forman pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Gabby McIntire pitched the fifth and final inning and did not allow a hit.
Siena Heights (24-18) scored first with a single run in the first. Indiana Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second before Siena Heights scored one in the home half for a 2-2 tie after two. Indiana Wesleyan then scored three runs in each of the next two innings and two in the fifth for the eight-run mercy rule.
In the fifth inning of game two, Tamara Davis ripped a triple to score second baseman Spencer Ferrin for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, shortstop Emily Sell connected on a 2-run, 2-out single for a 3-0 Wildcat advantage.
In the top of the seventh leftfielder Sam Hemming added an insurance run with an RBI single. The run would prove to be pivotal as Indiana Wesleyan needed to record just three more outs with a 4-0 cushion.
The Saints had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Abbie Forman was trying to put the finishing touches of a shutout before SHU cleared the bases on a double. The game-tying run was now in scoring position at second base. The runner moved to third on a wild pitch but Forman induced a game-ending fly out to center as IWU held on to the 4-3 victory.
Forman allowed three runs on six hits as she collected the win. Three Wildcats combined for six of the eight hits that IWU had in the game. Tamara Davis, Emily Sell, and Sam Hemming all pounded out two hits apiece while Katie Smith was 1-for-2 with two walks.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Wildcat Field for their next doubleheader. Those games will be at 12 noon on Saturday versus Asbury (Ky.) University.
