Box Score 2 MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University and Bethel (Ind.) College each find themselves near the top of the Mid-Central College Conference standings entering play today in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan entered play with a 9-1 conference mark while Bethel was unbeaten in four MCC games. Bethel has been the class of the conference by winning five of the past six conference championships.
A pitchers' duel broke out in the opener that Bethel won 2-1 and the nightcap Bethel claimed a 6-3 victory to improve to 6-0 atop the conference.
Abbie Forman was stellar in the opening game as she pitched a 3-hit complete game. She allowed two earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts.
Centerfielder Tamara Davis accounted for most of the Indiana Wesleyan offense in game one as she earned two of the team's three hits. Her second hit was a leadoff double in the sixth inning as she later scored the tying run on a Bethel error for a 1-1 game.
Unfortunately the Pilots would quickly regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a passed ball. The Wildcats would go down in order in the seventh as Bethel won 2-1.
Indiana Wesleyan (31-9, 9-3 MCC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. After the first two IWU batters went down, first baseman Jessica Hull reached on an error and designated player Dana Runyan followed with a 2-run home run. Bethel scored one in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 IWU lead that would last until the fourth inning.
The Wildcats added to their lead with a run in the top of the fourth. Shortstop Emily Sell drilled a double to centerfield that scored pinch runner Michelle McGary all the way from first.
But Bethel (12-10, 6-0 MCC) captured their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth with three runs for a 4-3 advantage. Bethel scored three runs on three hits and a collection of Indiana Wesleyan errors. Bethel would tack on single runs in each the fifth and sixth innings for the 6-3 lead and the victory.
For the second straight game Indiana Wesleyan managed just three hits. Dana Runyan, Emily Sell, and second baseman Kristina Ross accounted for the Wildcat hits in the loss.
Abbie Forman (23-5) went the distance again in game two as she allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk while earning six punch-outs.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to action at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 as the Wildcats travel to Adrian, Michigan for a doubleheader at Siena Heights University.
