Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- A day after Cornerstone (Mich.) University brought a close to the Indiana Wesleyan University softball 17-game win streak, IWU exacted a bit of revenge by cruising past Cornerstone in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan dominated play in the opener until some late run made it close in a 5-3 IWU victory. IWU then completed the four game series with Cornerstone in a dominant 13-4 win in five innings.
Although Indiana Wesleyan won by just two in the opener, the game was hardly in doubt as starting pitcher Abbie Forman was perfect through six innings. Cornerstone got their first base runner of the game to lead off the seventh inning on a walk. The next batter came up and broke up the no-hitter with a bunt single and then Forman lost the shutout when the very next batter hit a 3-run home run.
But Forman settled down to strike out the next batter. The Golden Eagles had their third hit of the inning but she was quickly wiped out in the form of a game-ending double play.
Forman finished with a three-hit complete game for the win. She walked one while striking out 11 Golden Eagles.
Indiana Wesleyan scored in the first inning which for six innings looked like it would stand as the winning run. Centerfield Tamara Davis led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a triple by first baseman Jessica Hull.
IWU added three runs in the fifth inning to up the lead to 4-0. Jessica Hull singled home the first run of while pinch runner Gabby McIntire scored on a wild throw after Hull stole second. That error allowed Hull to advance to third and she then scored on a sac fly to left off the bat of designated player Dana Runyan.
Right-fielder Erin Moeller had the final RBI of the game for IWU in the sixth when she doubled home pinch runner Kristina Ross for the 5-0 lead.
Jessica Hull finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and Tamara Davis added a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Bryttany Van Vliet and Erin Moeller were both 2-for-3 in the game.
The Wildcats competed the sweep in a big way in game two. The game was never in doubt as the Wildcats plated nine runs in the opening inning as the Golden Eagle starting pitcher only recorded one out.
Three more runs in the second inning gave IWU the commanding 12-1 advantage en route to the mercy rule victory after five innings.
Van Vliet was 3-for-3 with a double, five RBI, and a run scored. Hull, shortstop Emily Sell, and Moeller each tallied two hits as IWU outhit CU 12-5 in the game. Nine different Wildcats crossed the plate in the nine run win.
Forman improved her record to 18-1 on the mound this season by pitching four innings. She allowed three runs -- two earned -- on three hits, two walks, and five punch-outs. Gabby McIntire pitched the fifth and surrendered an unearned run.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 25-5 this season and will quickly return to the diamond with a game on Monday at 1 p.m. IWU will host Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University at Wildcat Field in a non-conference doubleheader.
