Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Goshen (Ind.) College becomes victim No. 15 and No. 16 on Wednesday in the Indiana Wesleyan University softball 16-game win streak.
The Wildcats swept the visiting Maple Leafs (7-15, 0-4 MCC) to move to 22-4 on the season and 4-0 in Mid-Central College Conference play. IWU won the opener 11-3 in six innings and completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. The Wildcats have not lost since March 5.
"We were not looking at this as No. 15 and No. 16," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Babinski. "We were looking at the next inning, we were looking at Goshen, and we were looking at how to score and how to hold them. It's the one inning at a time approach. We tell them we need to win innings so it's always urgent to score runs and never settle."
Power was an added dimension to the offensive attack today as eight of the 18 Indiana Wesleyan hits were the extra base variety. Third baseman Bryttany Van Vliet, first baseman Jessica Hull, and designated player Dana Runyan all doubled in the opener while centerfielder Tamara Davis led the game off with a triple. The extra bases kept coming in game two as Davis and Hull homered while catcher Katie Smith and Runyan each doubled.
"The winded aided the power today, maybe gave them a little confidence," said Babinski. "But they got their hands to the ball and extended through it. Today was a very good day to hit and it was fun watching our kids hit. What I loved was that many of our big hits came opposite field and up the middle where the wind was blowing so that tells me our kids had a really good game plan."
In the opening game Goshen struck first with a single run in the top of the first. But that lead did not last long as Indiana Wesleyan scored four runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to quickly take a 6-1 lead.
With the Wildcats leading 7-3 in the sixth, IWU exploded for four runs to earn the run rule at 11-3. Bryttany Van Vliet scored the game-winning run after Spencer Ferrin grounded out to third but an errant throw to first went wide allowing the winning run to score.
Abbie Forman earned the win for the Wildcats with a complete game. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four.
In the second game on Wednesday, Goshen again jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first. But much like the first game Indiana Wesleyan would quickly regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. A Jessica Hull RBI groundout and a RBI double to deep center by Dana Runyan accounted for both IWU runs in the inning.
The Wildcats poured it on in the fourth with four more runs to lead 6-1. Bryttany Van Vliet was credited with an RBI single for the first run of the frame. The rest of the runs came in when Tamara Davis hit a 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a 3-run home run.
Goshen cut the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning but Indiana Wesleyan quickly pushed the advantage back to five in the bottom of the inning. Jessica Hull led the inning off with a towering home run to centerfield than nearly rolled to the baseball field across the parking lot. The home run was the final tally of the game for the 7-2 score.
Forman (15-1) again was credited with the win as she pitched six innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits. She did not walk a batter for the second straight game and struck out seven Maple Leaf hitters.
"With the wind at the hitter's back it was a great day to hit," said Babinski about allowing five runs on Wednesday. "So we weren't expecting either team to throw shutouts. Even when they scored runs in their first innings we knew it would not be a 1-0 ballgame. So we didn't panic and we were able to score some runs."
Indiana Wesleyan continues its busy schedule this weekend with a four game series at home with Cornerstone (Mich.) University. IWU hosts Cornerstone at 4 p.m. on Friday and then again at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Wildcat Field.
