VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Indiana Wesleyan University finished 16th at the 2012 NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championship today at the Fort Vancouver Historic National Site in Vancouver, Washington.
Highlighting the event for Indiana Wesleyan was Ethan Naylor. He earned NAIA All-American honors for his 16th place finish in the 309-runner field as he crossed the line of the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes 2 seconds.
Naylor reached rare company with his NAIA All-American feat as he becomes just the seventh Wildcat to earn the honor in program history and first in 13 years. Also capturing NAIA All-American honors in Indiana Wesleyan history are: John Foss (1979, 1982), Robert Sommers (1991-92), Ryan Sommers (1991), Edward Popoola (1993), Luke Baker (1997, 1999), and Frank Pizana (1997).
Indiana Wesleyan was 16th as a team in the 31-team field. Naylor was 11th in the team competition while Andrew Albert placed 35th (49th overall) in a time of 25:36. Ethan Laudermilch earned 94th place (127th overall) in 26:26, John Wilson took 125th (170th overall) in 26:49, and Jonny Mendez was the final scorer in 134th (184th overall) at 26:55.
The other two Wildcats to race on Saturday were Matt McAndrews in 142nd (197th overall) in a time of 27:00 and Matt Mitchell was 165th (237th overall) in 27:30.
University of Saint Francis (Ill.) won the NAIA national championship with 138 points to edge Southern Oregon University with 153 points and Cal State-San Marcos at 165 points.
The individual national champion was John Gilbertson of The Master's (Calif.) College. He was the first across the line in a time of 23:56.
