Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Corey Lopez finished off a great attack in the 48th minute for the only score on Homecoming as Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer defeated Goshen (Ind.) College 1-0 at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan came out aggressively to start the second half and was finally able to break the Goshen defensive line. Seth Douwsma served a nice ball into the box where Lopez was able to head it past the diving Goshen keeper.
"At halftime we spoke about making the extra pass and getting it behind their defense and to get early serves," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. "And that is exactly what Seth Douwsma does. It's good to see him as a senior put the team on his shoulders. He put a great ball in and Corey Lopez headed the ball -- off his Mohawk -- right into the goal. It was really a world class play."
The Wildcats really controlled the tempo of the match. IWU outshot the Maple Leafs 15-7 and limited them to just one shot on goal.
"Defensively, for about 89 minutes, we did a really nice job," continued Castro. "We had a little slip up at the end which switched the mood a little bit because they had a chance to tie it up and send it to overtime. Fortunately things worked out for us."
Goshen had a near breakaway in the closing seconds. IWU defender Josh Schultz was shoulder-to shoulder with Goshen forward Khavoir Graham. As the two jockeyed for position, Graham went down just inside the 18-yard box as the ball went into the corner and was cleared out.
"Whenever we play Goshen it's never easy and it's always close," continued Castro. "They do a great job of preparing."
"And we had two really good days of training to prepare for this. The mental focus from our team was really spot on and the physical aspect came in too. Guys played well and managed the ball. Louis Carpenter did a terrific job at holding mid and locked things down centrally and changing the point of attack."
Indiana Wesleyan increases their unbeaten streak to 11 in a row as they now stand 9-1-3 on the season and 4-0-1 in the Crossroads League. Goshen drops to 6-6-1 and 1-3-1 in league play.
The Wildcats return to the field at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 at Marian (Ind.) University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
