MARION, Ind. -- No. 9-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball won the program's fifth ever league title on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Marian (Ind.) University on Senior Day inside Luckey Arena.
The outright Crossroads League regular season championship is the first for the Wildcats since winning the Mid-Central College Conference title in 2006. The Wildcats did claim the postseason tournament championship a year ago in a win at Taylor (Ind.) University.
"I'm so proud of the girls," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Candace Moats. "They had a goal to try to do something we haven't done in a long time, and that is to capture the league's regular season championship. And what a great moment to do it on Senior Day when the seniors were the ones driving this charge through the whole season. These guys have persevered through a lot of things and I'm very proud of them and proud to be their coach."
Indiana Wesleyan also celebrated the four seniors on this year's team: Brooke Atwell, Yui Iwase, Rachel Quackenbush, and Jordan Sudzina. The seniors and their families were introduced in a pre-game moment and following the match a video was shown and then Moats and the team talked about the senior class.
The 25-20, 25-22, 25-15 victory was the 20th in a row for Indiana Wesleyan as the team improves to 27-1 on the season and 15-1 in the Crossroads League. Two matches still remain in league play.
Junior middle hitter Kristine Egebrecht finished with a match-high 14 kills and junior outside hitter Rae Brandes added 11. Iwase assisted on 34 kills to lead all players while junior libero Rebecca Brandes earned 16 digs.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the court at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24 at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. Next weekend, Indiana Wesleyan competes in the Boneyard Brawl Tournament in Georgetown, Kentucky. IWU will have rematches with a pair of ranked opponents that have already lost to the Wildcats this season -- No. 18-ranked IU-East and No. 5-ranked Lee (Tenn.) University.
