Men's Soccer

Seniors Produce Big on Senior Night in OT Win over Bethel

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- The last regular season home game for the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer seniors was a memorable one as Indiana Wesleyan went into another overtime to win 2-1 over visiting Bethel (Ind.) College at Wildcat Field.

"This is a great game for us as Bethel is a high quality opponent," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Mark Castro. "It was an interesting game in the sense that it went back and forth, the momentum shifts went back and forth, and it made for a really good game.

A Bethel foul on senior Mark Keating early in the overtime period set up the game-winning goal for Indiana Wesleyan. The foul set up a free kick situation deep in the Bethel half that ended with an IWU corner kick. Off that play, freshman Corey Lopez headed home the game winner just over a minute into overtime with assists from senior Micah Snyder and junior Tad Glibert.

Indiana Wesleyan was forced to come from behind as Bethel scored early in the game's eighth minute. But a pair of IWU seniors connected in the 38th minute to tie the score 1-1. Seth Douwsma scored the tying goal with the assist being credited to Lucas Carpenter. There would be no more scores until the Lopez goal in overtime.

"I'm super proud of the seniors," said Castro. "Seth scored, Louie got the assist, the foul on Keating set up the winning score it overtime, and Micah got the assist on the winner. Just a good night for our seniors."

The Wildcats held a slim 10-9 advantage in shots Saturday night including 2-0 in the 1:07 of OT. IWU also held a small 6-5 advantage in shots on goal as Wildcat freshman goalkeeper Josh Goepper was able to make four saves for the win in net.

Indiana Wesleyan improves to 11-1-3 overall and 6-0-1 in Crossroads League play while Bethel drops to 8-4-3 and 2-3-2 in league action. IWU has now tied in three matches while winning two more in extra time.

Indiana Wesleyan moves a little closer to a Crossroads League regular season championship. The IWU win tonight, coupled with the Spring Arbor (Mich.) University loss to Grace (Ind.) College, Indiana Wesleyan holds a five point lead with two matches remaining. Indiana Wesleyan can win the outright title in their next game, on the road Tuesday at Taylor (Ind.) University, or clinch at least a share of the title with a tie.

"We're still number one, solely in the league, and it looks like right now for us to win the league regular season championship it's winning at Taylor on Tuesday," said Castro. "That's going to be a battle. They won today so they've won a couple in a row and it's going to be another wild and crazy league game that means a lot."

The Grant County clash begins at 7 p.m. in Upland, Indiana.
