Men's Basketball

Quick Night at the Office as Men's Basketball Outlasts Huntington in Just 2 OT

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team must not believe in the 9-to-5 mantra these days. But overtime has gelled pretty well with the Wildcats in the past 96 hours.

No. 16-ranked Indiana Wesleyan took to the road and beat Huntington (Ind.) University 80-78 in double overtime at the Merillat Center. Over the past four days Indiana Wesleyan has played a total of five overtime periods in two games.

The Wildcats improve to 4-0 in overtime games this season, including a 90-85 victory versus Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University in 3 OT on Saturday and tonight's 2 OT win. IWU also beat then No. 4-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) College 100-93 and then No. 6-ranked Cornerstone 91-89 in the beginning of November.

Indiana Wesleyan (16-9, 8-5 MCC) continues to provide a wide array of ways to attack the opponent as 10 players saw double digit minutes tonight. And as sophomore guard Jordan Weidner, the reigning Mid-Central College Conference Player of the Week, continues to sizzle during the three game-win streak, IWU received a great lift off the bench.

Sophomore center Parker Stouffer scored 15 points on 7-of-7 shooting in 23 minutes. Stouffer finished two points shy of his career-high of 17 set on December 17, 2011 at Trinity Christian (Ill.) College.

Huntington (14-11, 6-7 MCC) would build an eight point lead (29-21) in the opening half and looked to open up a double digit lead with less than six minutes remaining before halftime. But Indiana Wesleyan exploded for an 11-2 run to end the half and actually took a 32-31 advantage into the locker room. Four different Wildcats scored during the stretch.

Indiana Wesleyan scored the first six points of the second half to stretch the run to 17-2 from the end of the first half. A Stouffer dunk with 13 minutes remaining netted IWU its largest lead of the night at 45-37.

The Foresters meticulously chipped away at the Wildcat lead until an 8-2 burst gave HU its first lead of the second half at 58-56 with 1:32 to play. That was the score until Weidner drove the lane with 29 seconds on the clock and was fouled. He hit both free throws to tie the score. The Wildcat defense held on the final Forester possession and junior guard George Jones IV blocked a Forester shot as time expired.

In the first overtime, Indiana Wesleyan had the last possession with the score tied 66-66. Senior guard Derrick Troyer drove towards the basket as time was expiring. He found junior forward Patrick Hopkins driving right up the middle and his shot at the horn hit the back of the rim to force a second overtime.

With 2:06 remaining in the second overtime Troyer knocked down two free throws for a 73-69 lead and IWU was then forced to hang on for dear life. Leading by two with half a minute to play Weidner drove to the basket as the shot clock was set to expire. His shot missed but junior guard Aaron Martin pulled down the offensive board. Following a timeout, Weidner was fouled and sent to the line where he hit both free throws for a 77-73 lead.

Huntington senior forward Caleb Kennedy scored in the paint with 11 seconds remaining to bring the game to a single possession at 77-75. Kennedy was fouled on the play but missed the free throw. Kennedy scored a game-high 26 points.

Weidner pulled down the rebound and was fouled with nine seconds to play. He again hit both shots for a 79-75 advantage. But Huntington quickly raced down the court and scored with under five seconds to play. Weidner was again fouled with four seconds remaining. Weidner missed the first shot but made the second for an 80-77 lead. Weidner led the Wildcats with 25 points.

Indiana Wesleyan senior guard David Peters purposely fouled Huntington guard Ryan Boester with 1.1 seconds to go. Boester hit the first free throw for an 80-78 score. He intentionally missed the second free throw but the ball bounced deep along the baseline where a quick shot went up but was nowhere close for the big IWU victory.

Indiana Wesleyan shot extremely well from the floor and the free throw line on Tuesday. IWU shot at a 51.6-percent (32 of 62) clip and 77.8-percent (14 of 18) from the foul line.

Troyer contributed 16 points, five boards, and four assists while Hopkins added 10 points and five rebounds. In 50 minutes of play, Indiana Wesleyan committed just 14 turnovers.

The Wildcats return home at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 4 against Spring Arbor (Mich.) University in Luckey Arena.
