Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball had no answer today in a doubleheader loss to No. 19-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College at Wildcat Field.
Bethel collected a pair of five inning mercy rule victories with wins of 11-0 and 9-0 to improve to 18-5 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-Central College Conference. Indiana Wesleyan drops to 16-12 on the season and 3-5 in conference action.
Defensive struggles led to the Pilots big 11-0 victory in the opening contest. Two Wildcat errors in the first inning led to six unearned runs to begin the day. In all, only four of the 11 Pilot runs were earned.
Bethel tacked on three more runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth for the win.
Indiana Wesleyan only mustered two hits in the game, one by first baseman/pitcher Erin Moeller and third baseman/second baseman Chelsea Jones.
Abbie Forman pitched four innings and allowed nine runs - three earned - on seven hits. Moeller pitched the final inning and surrendered two runs - one earned - on two hits.
Bethel continued to dominate in game two with the 9-0 victory, outhitting Indiana Wesleyan 12-to-2.
The Pilots continued to tack on runs early with a three spot in the first. Neither team scored again until the Pilots scored two more in the fourth to lead 5-0. BC completed the mercy rule win with a four spot on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.
Jones and catcher Katie Smith were the only Wildcats with hits in game two while designated player Dana Runyan drew a walk.
Moeller started the game for IWU but was removed after she gave up three runs on five hits without recording an out. Forman completed the rest of the game and Bethel scored six runs - five earned - on her.
Indiana Wesleyan will renew acquaintances with Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at Taylor in Upland, Indiana.
